Galway’s General Post Office on Eglinton Street in Galway city centre has long been a part of the fabric of this thriving city. An Post, through its sole agent, Cushman & Wakefield, are now offering the property to the open market.

Galway is finally to gain a permanent civic arts space in the city centre as part of a multi-million-euro redevelopment of the Galway Post Office.

An “exciting future” leading to the “transformation” of the city centre awaits Galway, but only if the €63 million in funding under the Urban Regeneration and Development Fund is “delivered in a timely manner.”

Unless the Government steps up its commitments to support An Post, the post office network in the State will be at risk of collapse.

The banks were always a key part of the development and growth of towns and villages across the country. In my home town, we had three banks. The Bank of Ireland (where my dad was the porter for a quarter of a century; the Munster and Leinster Bank (later AIB), and the Ulster Bank. All three were housed in fine solid buildings from a different age. Buildings that marked their importance in the town.
